Fundamentals of Meditation For Beginners Introduction

Practicing meditation provides lots of excellent advantages for your physical and mental health.

But you need to be aware that it has a certain learning curve you will have to go through before getting any benefits. It is unlikely to be a skill you are going to get a hang of instantly.

You will have to start simply and get better with experience but it is well worth perservering.

Below are four tips for novices who are just starting with their practice of meditation.

#1 Begin your meditating path with guided meditations

When you are a beginner that is new to meditation, it can be difficult to sit in silence and attempt to meditate on your own.

You may have more success to begin with if you use guided meditations.  This is where, during your meditation, you listen attentively to an audio of somebody that is guiding you through the meditation.

They will speak to you in a quiet, slow and comforting voice throughout the meditation. Many meditation scripts will talk you through exactly how to relax and unwind your body as well as helping you clear your mind for the purposes of the meditation exercise.

During the audio, the speaker will imprint on you different images your mind can use to focus on that will help you out of your current state of mind. The assumption is that you want to slow your mind down and enjoy some relaxation during the meditation.

#2 Think about using a timer at first

One of the issues individuals who are just getting into practicing meditation have is not knowing for how long you have actually been doing it or when you ought to stop.

While there is no time limit to meditate and you don’t want to limit yourself, not knowing the time or how much time it has been can cause you to regularly check up on the clock. Every time you open your eyes and change your focus to take a look at the moment, you break your meditative state and have to spend some time getting back into it.

To avoid this, just set a timer on your watch or mobile phone to go off at a set time. It may be ten, fifteen or more minites depending on your capability but it will allow you not to worry about time. If you are an absolute beginner, you can set it for simply 2-3 minutes at first and then after that you can gradually increase it.

Using this trick, you focus just on meditating and understand you don’t stop till that timer goes off.

#3 Practice regular and deep breathing

Breathing exercises are often made use of during meditation. The aim is that as you breathe in and subsequently out, you only focus on the oxygen you are taking in and also your breaths themselves. This process distracts your mind and stops you from thinking of and being concerned about other things.

A secondary benefit of regular deep breathing is that it will help you to lower your tension, reduce stress as well as generally helping to relax your body.

Maintaining your breathing is a fundamental skill and is very important to learn when you first start meditating.

Research a breathing exercise you think you can master. Maintain that breathing exercise during the entire time you are practicing each meditation.

#4 Establish a suitable and helpful meditating environment

The place you choose to carry out you meditations is one of one of the most essential things to keep in mind.

Ideally you need to have a peaceful room where you can be left alone and won’t have interruptions. The tv must be off and your cell phone switched off totally, not just on vibrate.

It’s not always possible but it’s probably better in the beginning if you can conduct your meditation when you are home alone. That way way you are not likely to be distracted by other people making noise in other rooms of the house.

If you can never get the house to yourself, figure out a place where others are less likely to bother you. Even if this means going down to a space in the basement or in a loft if you have one.

If you are really struggling to find a place you can be alone, consider combining your meditation with your daily shower and meditate standing in the shower.

Finally, if there is nowhere in the house you can get some peace for meditation, try setting yourself up for a walking meditation. Read more about walking meditation mindfulness here.
